Witnesses told the BBC the elderly man was looked after and cared for by two off-duty nurses until paramedics arrived.

Steve O'Leary, who lives on King George's Avenue, said: "It's worrying when an incident happens right at the end of your road.

"My first thought was that it could have been a child as the school is just past the junction and parents walk their children across the main road.

"I was relieved to hear that wasn't the case, and that the elderly gentleman was looked after by some nurses until the ambulance arrived."

Witnesses are asked to call Essex Police, quoting incident number 179 of 27 November.
