Winter solstice swimmers take dip in Bristol Harbour

Dozens of swimmers have taken the plunge in Bristol's harbour today, for the city's first ever Winter Solstice swim.

Swimming was allowed in the harbour for the first time last year after campaigning by open-water swimmers.

The event was organised by All Aboard Watersports, who also provided a sauna and free coffee for swimmers to warm up after leaving the water.

"We are definitely planning on doing it again, it's just a lovely thing to do," said Gemma Corbett from All Aboard.

The event was run with fully trained lifeguards supervising swimmers, and those entering the water were advised to prepare by concentrating on their breathing.

Ms Corbett told the BBC the turnout was the highest she had ever seen.

"We will be here on New Year's Day too," she added.

Founder of campaign group Swim Bristol Harbour, Johnny Palmer, told the BBC the water was "great."

"It's the first time it has been done on the Winter Solstice, and I hope it's carried on throughout the whole of the winter.

"It's a great community here and the best way to start a Saturday," he said.
