Former MP announces candidacy in next local election

A former Northampton MP has announced that she will be standing as a candidate in next year's local elections.

Sally Keeble, who was the Labour Northampton North MP between 1997 and 2010, will stand to be Labour councillor at West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) for Dallington, Spencer and Kings Heath.

Announcing the news on Facebook, she said she was "delighted to be selected".

After Ms Keeble lost her seat in 2010, she stood again three times unsuccessfully and decided not to stand last year so a new generation could get involved.

The former MP said she had three reasons for her return including "the appalling state of council services" and a new Labour government giving a "once in a generation chance to deliver for people in West Northants".

Ms Keeble added that the third reason was "the amazing kindness of local people" who told her "not to give up fighting for people".

The other candidates have not yet been confirmed. The WNC unitary and parish council elections will be held on 1 May 2025.
