Drone charging start-up partners with council

A drone charging start-up has entered into an agreement with a council to explore potential sites for infrastructure.

AeroGrid, based in Hertfordshire, and West Northamptonshire Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to identify suitable locations for drone charging points within the council's property portfolio.

Potential sites include rooftops of council-owned buildings, open fields and other public spaces.

Leon Emirali, chief executive and founder of AeroGrid, said: "West Northamptonshire is full of opportunity to become a leading hub of commercial drone transport and we envisage huge growth opportunities for the region."

The MoU said West Northamptonshire Council was "open to exploring the possibility of AeroGrid utilising its properties and land for the placement and operation of drone charging infrastructure".

Mr Emirali said the company chose the region for its proximity to existing and planned fulfilment and logistics centres, as they were expected to be critical in the future of drone deliveries.

The firm's founder added he estimated UK wide commercial drone delivery could be rolled out "within two years".

Daniel Lister, Conservative cabinet member for local economy, culture and leisure at West Northamptonshire Council, said: "[The local authority] is pleased to explore this opportunity with AeroGrid.

"This agreement aligns with our commitment to sustainable growth and innovation, ensuring West Northamptonshire is at the forefront of technological advancements that bring tangible benefits to our residents and economy."
