Outdated tower block to make way for new homes

A city tower block in poor condition and past its "design life" is to be demolished to make way for new homes after permission was granted.

The 112 flats in William Malcolm House in Coventry will be knocked down in 2025 as part of a £21m regeneration scheme in Wyken by Citizen Housing.

The housing provider had originally decided to rehouse residents and demolish the 1960's tower block two years ago, an update earlier this year stated.

The city council approved plans on Tuesday which will see 60 new homes built in its place on Attoxhall Road.

An officer said the authority had no objections adding the building “does not have any historic or architectural merit that would warrant its protection".

Temporary protection was recently installed at the block after fragments of concrete fell from its facade, the group revealed.

Work to knock down the building is due to start in May and end in November 2025.

Citizen Housing said it was working closely with the flats’ residents to help them move and hoped this would be finished by summer.
