Lower speed limits have been introduced to a village after complaints from residents over speeding.

The pilot scheme in Theale, Berkshire follows a consultation and could lead to similar restrictions in other areas.

A motion presented to West Berkshire Council in March 2023, supported more widespread use of 20mph speed limits.

Councillor Stuart Gourley, portfolio holder for environment and highways said "we are addressing local concerns" and "making our roads safer".

The new speed limits came into effect on October 11.

The council's strategy is to introduce 20mph speed limits in residential areas where residents want them.

Mr Gourley said it is an "important milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve our highways" and "enhance the quality of life for our residents".

He added: "By reducing speed limits in Theale, we are addressing local concerns, making our roads safer, and supporting the council's long-term commitment to creating safer, more sustainable communities."

Councillor Alan Macro, ward member for Theale said "Residents have complained to me many times over the years about the speed of traffic in the village.

"I am very pleased that these petitions have now resulted in the introduction of 20mph limits covering the main residential area of Theale and a 30mph limit in The Green.

"These limits will make it much safer for pedestrians walking along the many narrow pavements in the village and should encourage more people to walk or cycle to the shops and schools."
