A woman has been charged with murder over the death of a 78-year-old in South Lanarkshire.

Louise Markson is accused of killing Susan Sergison at a home in the Gilmour Drive area of Hamilton on Wednesday.

Ms Sergison was found with serious injuries at about 20:25 and later died at the scene.

Ms Markson, 50, from Wishaw, made no plea during an initial appearance at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

Police Scotland initially said they were treating the death as unexplained.

Ch Insp Neil Smith said officers were remaining in the area for a short period to carry out inquiries.

He said: "My thoughts are with Susan's family and friends at this very difficult time and our officers will continue to support them as this investigation continues."

Ms Markson was remanded in custody and will appear in court again within the next eight days.
