Professional dog walkers now need a permit to walk their dogs on council-owned land in part of Surrey, a local authority says.

Tandridge District Council said the scheme aimed at promoting responsible dog walking will protect public spaces and ensure the safety of park users, dogs and wildlife.

The cost to apply for a professional dog walking permit, introduced on 1 April, is £73.

Council leader Catherine Sayer said: "This permit system will help maintain our parks and open spaces while ensuring professional dog walkers operate responsibly."

She said: "We encourage businesses to apply as soon as possible and urge dog owners to make sure they use walkers who have the correct permit or licence."

The council said professional dog walkers must have proof of liability insurance, limit the number of large or strong dogs walked together and use appropriate control equipment.

In 2023, a professional dog walker was mauled to death in in Gravelly Hill, Caterham.

Natasha Johnston, 28, from Croydon, had been walking eight dogs when she was fatally attacked on 12 January 2023.
