Fifteen out the 55 homes planned will be considered affordable housing

A medical equipment manufacturer has put forward plans to build more than 50 homes.

Reliance Medical wants to develop a new housing estate on empty land next to its building on West Avenue in Talke, Stoke-on-Trent.

The development would consist of 44 detached and semi-detached houses, along with 11 flats in three apartment blocks. Fifteen of the homes would be classed as affordable.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval and said it would boost the local housing supply and improve the appearance of the area.

The planning committee is expected to approve plans at a meeting later.

According to the officers’ report to the committee, the scheme has "good quality design" and is in a sustainable urban location with no highway safety concerns.

One objection

“The proposal would provide various social and economic benefits, most notably the construction of 55 new houses in a sustainable location within the urban area," its report notes.

"It has also been demonstrated that the design and appearance of the scheme would be of an appropriate quality and would not harm the visual amenity of the area.

“Onsite replanting and biodiversity enhancements have been proposed and other environmental objectives will be secured."

Vehicular access to the development would be via a new junction on Bowling Alley Street and off-street parking would be provided for each home.

The borough council received one letter supporting the application and one letter of objection.

The objector raised concerns over traffic, highway safety and the impact of construction on residents.
