Cash incentives are being offered to people who report dog owners who do not clean up after their pets in part of Shropshire.

Telford and Wrekin Council has launched a £50 reward scheme to tackle dog fouling with the cash paid out if a fine is issued by council wardens.

The authority this year started spray-painting signs next to illegal deposits in a bid to tackle "record amounts of dog poo being left in certain places".

Councillor Richard Overton said a few people were known to be persistent offenders.

"This reward scheme empowers the community to act and help us tackle this issue effectively. By working together, we can ensure our parks and streets remain clean and enjoyable for everyone," he added.

The £50 payment represents half of the fixed penalty notice that is paid by the dog owner.

Dog fouling was not only unpleasant but also posed health risks, the council said, and the aim was to encourage people to help towards keeping public areas clean.

Incidents can be reported on the MyTelford app and the Telford & Wrekin Watch confidential hotline.
