Surrey County Council plans to close the Bagshot community recycling centre

Plans to close a community recycling centre in Surrey are being put out to public consultation.

Surrey County Council said the facility in Bagshot is hard to get to, outdated and too small to be upgraded, and has been attracting anti-social behaviour.

It also said the site only handles around 1,700 tonnes of recycling each year, just 2% of the county's total.

The authority said it has alternative sites close by.

Natalie Bramhall, cabinet member for property, waste and infrastructure, said: “There are four alternative community recycling centres within 10 miles of Bagshot, with the closest being Camberley, approximately six miles away.

"These sites are modern, safe and all on one level, with no need to climb steps to tip waste," she said.

"These sites allow access to vans and trailers, and accept more types of waste. Some sites offer additional services such as a paint reuse shop at Guildford and a reuse shop at Woking."

The consultation is open until 11 October, and can be found here.
