Pensioners delighted with slipper-swapping service
Elliot Deady/BBCAbout 50 people took part in the launch of a free service to swap their worn-out slippers for brand new ones to help reduce falls and injuries.
Southend-on-Sea City Council's first slipper-swapping event of the year was held at Kent Elms Library on Tuesday morning.
Cliff Fletcher, 87, was one of the first in line and said it was a "wonderful service for the elderly".
Another four events are planned at locations across the borough in September.
Rachel Davis from the council's communities team said it was part of the authority's commitment to promote independent living and to reduce falls.
Elliot Deady/BBC"There are increased admissions to A&E with people that fall over and the outcomes for people that fall, particularly ageing residents, is that it can significantly reduce their independence, and a good pair of slippers can help reduce that," she explained.
The events are staffed by council colleagues alongside partners like occupational therapists, the NHS, a dementia co-ordinator, Healthwatch Essex, and Everyone Health, which provides strength and balance classes.
Mr Fletcher, a retired builder, said he took part in the slipper swap when it started last year and was referred to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to make sure his home was safe.
"It's been a very good experience," he said.
Maureen Riddell, 85, said she was a first-time swapper and her new slippers were "very nice".
Ms Davis said more than 450 pairs of slippers were given away during last year's drive and "significant" referrals had been made to the fire service and occupational therapists.
The footwear is recommended by the NHS, with features to make sure they are safe and secure, she added.
When is the next event?
The council said people at risk of falling could swap their old slippers for new ones at the following events, which all run between 10:00 and 12:00 BST:
- Southchurch Library – Tuesday, 10 September
- Age Concern, Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff-on-Sea – Monday, 16 September
- Shoeburyness Library – Tuesday 17, September
- The Forum Southend – Tuesday 24, September
