A hamster which suffered a prolapsed cheek pouch is doing well after undergoing surgery.

Mr Pickles was handed into RSPCA Derby where officers found he had the condition, which can be caused in hamsters by overeating or the types of food they eat.

The tiny rodent became a hit on social media after a picture of him was posted before his operation on Thursday.

Jamie Pritchard, from the charity, said: "He was OK but it looked quite shocking and he could not be left that way."

'Cracking little lad'

Mr Pickles, who was handed into the RSPCA by an owner who could no longer look after him, was taken to Highfields Vets in Derby where the decision was taken to remove the affected cheek entirely.

"With hamsters, surgery is always risky because they are such small animals and the anaesthetic has a big effect on them," Ms Pritchard said.

"When we sent him into the vet for the operation we had a very nervous day waiting for news. We had everything crossed.

"When they sent us a video of him looking very chilled and eating some food, we were so relieved."

Ms Pritchard added: "Now Mr Pickles only has one cheek pouch but he's doing really well and it hasn't affected his eating.

"He's a cracking little lad. He has an amazing personality, he's very confident and always on the go."

Anyone who could offer Mr Pickles a new home has been asked to contact the charity.
