About 20,000 visitors expected at historic fair

As many as 20,000 people were expected in a Devon town on Wednesday for its historic goose fair.

The one-day fair in Tavistock has been held every year since the 12th Century, apart from a two-year hiatus during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The town's mayor, Paul Ward, said it was a "huge day for the town as it's the biggest event of the year".

Stalls, side shows and rides were set up in the centre of the town, with traders coming from all over the country.

In previous times, the fair provided the opportunity for farmers to trade animals - mainly geese ready for fattening for Christmas.
