The clean-up has started at a crazy golf course which was "absolutely covered" in sand blown up by Storm Darragh.

Frosty Penguins Putting Adventure was inundated as Majuba Beach in Redcar was pummelled by extreme weather at the weekend.

Co-director Andrew Smith said: "We are a frosty, ice-cave theme, not a desert theme which we're resembling at the minute."

Volunteers and Redcar and Cleveland Council staff have started using shovels and diggers to clear the course in time for the busy Christmas week.

Mr Smith told BBC Radio Tees the course had been "absolutely covered, there's nowhere that hasn't been affected by it".

He estimated about 25 tonnes of sand had been blown across the attraction in the stormy weather.

"It's two feet to three feet deep where it's drifted," he said.

The local authority provided a mini-digger for the clean up.

Mr Smith added that a member of the public suggested they ask for volunteers to help after they found quotes from professional companies were not financially viable.

Volunteers have been asked to drop by on Thursday and Friday, with the promise of a hot drink for their help.

"It's a good cardio workout," Mr Smith said.

Co-director Andrew Smith said the Chirstmas trading period was "crucial"

Mr Smith said he was heartened by the offers of help, including from students at Middlesbrough College were going to come by.

The hope is to have the course cleared by the weekend.

"It's a crucial trading period over Christmas as we go into the quieter months of January and February," Mr Smith said.
