Artisan market visitor numbers 'above target'

Organisers of a monthly artisan market say the event has attracted thousands of people to Dorset's county town.

The market, held on Sundays in Dorchester, exceeded expectations with more than 10,000 visitors at the first event in April.

Some town centre shops have also started opening for at least half a day as a result of the market's success.

New dates have been set for 2025, but Bowling Alley Walks and Borough Gardens, which were less popular with visitors, will no longer host stalls

In a report to the town's joint markets panel, organiser Jules Bradburn said: "Footfall was above target and the market seemed well attended by both locals and visitors.

"We spoke to numerous people who had come from Poole and Bournemouth just for the markets, and one person who travels from Kent to stay with his mother on market dates.

"Traders were very pleased with the footfall and sales figures."

Mr Bradburn said the market will now be concentrated around South Street and South Walks.

The next event is scheduled for 27 April.
