Lucy Rigby will hold the title of solicitor general

The Labour MP for Northampton North has been appointed solicitor general.

Lucy Rigby worked as a solicitor before being elected to the House of Commons in July's general election.

Her predecessor in the constituency, Conservative Sir Michael Ellis, held the same position from 2019 to 2021.

The ministerial role will see Rigby responsible for matters delegated by the Attorney General - the Rt Hon Lord Hermer KC - including deputising for the him at the parliamentary business and legislation cabinet committee.

The solicitor general also supports the attorney general in his public interest functions and works to promote the rule of law at home and internationally.

Last month, Rigby was also appointed parliamentary private secretary to the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Shabana Mahmood.
