LongShots Trailer: Kicking the Clouds
Watch here the trailer of Kicking the Clouds, a short documentary by filmmaker and artist Sky Hopinka, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and a descendant of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño people.
Entirely shot in 16 mm, this 16-minute film starts when the filmmaker receives an old tape from his mother. In the recording, his grandmother learns the Pechanga language from her mum. This 50-year-old recording becomes a compass in a dreamlike and poignant journey through landscapes and memories of a Native American family and the different places they call home.
The film will be published in its entirety on the LongShots film festival page on September 8. During the festival, you will also be able to watch the Q&A with the director and all the other shortlisted LongShots movies. More importantly, from September 8 to September 19, you can vote for your favourite film and choose the winner of our Audience Award.
Dedicated this year to the theme of 'Journeys’, the BBC film festival LongShots spotlights the best short documentaries from the most interesting emerging filmmakers worldwide, handpicked by some of the most prestigious film festivals around the world.
Kicking the Clouds was nominated by Berlinale curator Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck. We hope you enjoy Sky Hopinka's poetic journey across his chosen home in Whatcom County, Washington, where his family still lives, far from their homelands in Southern California, yet a home, nonetheless.
