The island utopia that became a social experiment
The Nicaraguan art colony on the Solentiname Islands was founded by priest and poet Ernesto Cardenal in 1965, during a time of political unrest.
He encouraged locals to start painting as a way of healing, eventually creating their own signature and world-renowned style of primitivist art that celebrates nature.
