Israel has rejected global calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, while the United States has called for a "pause" in hostilities.

Israel has been bombing Gaza since the 7 October Hamas attacks that killed 1,400 people and saw at least 230 people taken hostage.

The BBC's analysis editor Ros Atkins examines what a ceasefire or humanitarian pause would mean for the region.
