A "sinkhole" is being dealt with as a matter of urgency, Guernsey Water has said.

A culvert outside the Little Chapel in St Andrews collapsed on Thursday night causing a hole about 1m (3.2ft) wide to form in the road.

Guernsey Water thanked Guernsey Police and States Works for their quick action in closing the road and putting diversions in place.

Operations manager Jon Holt said the issue was their "number one priority".

'Far too dangerous'

He said: "Teams will be working throughout the weekend in order to get the road reopened as soon as possible.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience this is going to cause but please be assured we are doing what we can to fix this as soon as possible."

Guernsey Water said the road was "far too dangerous to leave open" and diversions were in place.

It said staff were forming a plan on how to safely fix the culvert, fill the hole and reopen the road but were unable to provide a timeframe on the repair work.
