Windmill sails removed for essential repairs

The sails and cap of Waltham Windmill have been removed for significant repairs.

The vice chair of the Waltham Windmill Preservation Society, Peter Kingsford, said: "an in-situ repair at the top of the mill" was not as safe as "dropping the cap down" to complete the work at ground level.

The mill has six sails, was built between 1878 and 1880, and is one of just a handful still operating in northern Lincolnshire.

Suffolk-based millwright Tim Whiting, who is overseeing the work, said he hoped the cap and sails would be repaired and reinstalled by the end of the year.
