Disability charity 'sad and scared' after burglary

Staff at a Barnsley charity have been left "sad and 'scared" after thieves damaged their riding centre during a break-in.

CCTV caught thieves climbing across the roof before dropping down into the Barnsley Riding For The Disabled Association building on 8 July.

As well as items being stolen, the two criminals caused damage to the Pontefract Road centre.

Stacey Micklethwaite, deputy manager, said: "Anybody that could do something like that to a charity should be ashamed."

The charity offers horse-riding lessons for people with disabilities, catering for all ages.

Ms Micklethwaite said: "We've been left sad and scared, because we are in the middle of nowhere and you just don't know who is watching."

A number of local tradespeople have volunteered to help repair the damaged building but Ms Micklethwaite estimates that the charity is still missing items worth £500.

"We're just basically one big family. It is surprising how many people have come together after this," she added.

South Yorkshire Police said they wanted anyone with information to get in touch following the break-in at about 21:00 BST on Monday.
