Charges at new Pen y Fan, Brecon Beacons car park

Walkers climbing Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons will soon have to pay to park after the National Trust won permission to build a new car park.

The trust will expand the existing 50-space car park at Pont ar Daf near Storey Arms to include 260 bays.

In 2016, 115 drivers who parked on the A470 to visit the national park's highest peak during snow were fined.

The new site will also have electric car charging points and a dedicated space for mountain rescuers.

More than 350,000 people visit Pen y Fan every year but the trust said the current limited parking facilities in the area had caused "acute strains".

As well as paid for parking spaces, it will have time-limited free bays for those using the toilets, as well as bays for disabled users, minibuses, coaches and cyclists.
