Cardiff Christmas tree collections cancelled amid strike

Christmas tree collections are being cancelled in Cardiff after the council's bin collectors went on strike.

The Unite union said the four-week strike was set to last from 28 December to 25 January.

The council apologised for the disruption and suggested alternative ways to dispose of their trees.

Many complained online, with one woman posting on Facebook that the council "should be ashamed".

In a statement, the council said: "Unfortunately, due to the strike we will be unable to collect Christmas trees this year."

It said residents could attend a drop-off point at the city's Heath Park on the first weekend of January or bring their trees to its recycling centres without making a booking.

Another suggested option was: "If you have space, your Christmas tree could also be chopped up and placed in your green bin until the garden waste collections re-start in the spring."
