An investigation is under way to determine the cause of a fire at a hospital ward.

Six fire crews were sent to Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda at Llwynypia, Rhondda Cynon Taf, following the callout at about 04:10 GMT.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board said no staff or patients were hurt.

Crews and staff were able to quickly deal the fire, leading to a "swift resolution", said the fire service.

Some fire crews remained at scene to help get the hospital back to normal, it said.

Gareth Robinson, the health board's chief operating officer, said patients affected by the fire had been promptly relocated within the hospital.

"Our staff acted extremely quickly, and combined with the effectiveness of our health board's fire protocols, the fire was confined to one area of the site and swiftly resolved.

"Any members of the public due to visit the hospital today, in accordance with the current Covid restrictions, should feel completely reassured that the hospital is safe."

He said the next of kin of any affected patients had already been contacted.
