Snow and ice hits Wales as cold weather continues

Wales saw a dusting of snow and some spectacular ice formations as the cold weather continued across the country.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice from 08:00 GMT on Saturday until 22:00.

Motorists and pedestrians were warned of slippery conditions, which the forecaster said could cause "some injuries from falls".

Police in Aberystwyth earlier said freezing rain was "making the roads and paths treacherous".

The Met Office also warned of icy patches on some "untreated roads and pavements".

Meanwhile, Gwent Police issued a warning to avoid walking on iced ponds, after two reports of young people playing on frozen water in Blaina, Blaenau Gwent.

Overnight temperatures dropped to as low as -5.6°C at Parc Bryn Bach in Tredegar, in the same county.

The Met Office said snow was expected at low levels with up to 2.8in (7cm) over higher ground.

On high ground, strong winds "may lead to temporary blizzard conditions and drifting," it added.

The yellow warning covered most of the country, with Anglesey, Flintshire, Wrexham and Monmouthshire the only counties which were not covered by the warning.
