Driving warning as temperatures drop after snowfall

Nearly 240 schools closed across north and mid Wales and travel was disrupted on Tuesday because of heavy snow falls.

More hazardous driving conditions are expected as temperatures drop as low as -7C (19.4F) in some areas overnight.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it has received "numerous" reports of heavy snow in parts of Carmarthenshire.

The force is advising drivers to not take unnecessary risks and beware of icy patches.

A yellow "be aware" warning of snow remains in force across Wales.

The Met Office has upgraded a yellow warning of snow on Thursday into Friday to an amber "be prepared" warning covering everywhere except Anglesey, Conwy and Flintshire, which remain at yellow.

Councils said on Monday they were confident supplies of grit were at sufficient levels, while the head of a homeless charity warned people left on the streets could die in the current conditions.

A church in Bridgend has been taking in homeless people to protect them from the cold.

Pastor Lem Turner from Compassion Church told BBC Radio Wales: "We opened up the doors of our church for anyone who was sleeping out. We asked people to volunteer and we had an overwhelming response from people in our community.

"Last night was 10 people. We did our best... to send a team out to look for people within our community to make sure there wasn't anyone (sleeping out).

"We will continue to do this as long as the weather keeps up."

Tuesday's Wales Premier League fixture between TNS and Bala has been postponed because of the snow.

In north Wales, the British Red Cross has been using 4x4 vehicles to ferry hospital staff who live in rural areas to work.

Emergency response officer Aimee Thomas said she was drafting in more volunteers to take doctors and nurses to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, in anticipation of worse weather later this week.

She said: "If we can't get these members of staff to the hospital then, they can't help the hundreds of patients they come into contact with every day."
