Man dies in hospital after farm accident
A man has died in hospital following an accident on a farm in the south west of Scotland.
Derek Roan, 71, died from injuries sustained at Barnbarroch Farm near Dalbeattie on Sunday.
In a statement, his family said: "We are totally devastated and still in shock about what has happened and it will take some time for us to come to terms with not having him around."
Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
Mr Roan was married with three children and six grandchildren.
This Farming Life
The family had featured on BBC Two's This Farming Life. They run two dairy farms and a milk delivery business.
"All Derek's hard work was for his two passions in life - his family and his farms," the family said on Facebook.
"Derek was well known within the farming community and many other circles. He will be sadly missed by all.
"We would like to thank everyone for sending their condolences during this difficult time for us."
The Health and Safety Executive said it was aware of the incident and would be making inquiries into the circumstances surrounding it.
A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.
'Shock waves'
NFU Scotland president Martin Kennedy said the union's thoughts were with Mr Roan's family.
"Words are never enough in these dreadful circumstances but, in Derek, NFU Scotland has lost a real stalwart," he said.
"He was a member who, for many years, went above and beyond to represent farming at a local, regional, and national level.
"He was an excellent past chair of both Stewartry branch and Dumfries and Galloway region and always ensured that all those round the table took part in any discussion and had their say."
Current Dumfries and Galloway regional chairman Colin Ferguson said Mr Roan's death had sent "shock waves through the region and beyond".
He said he had been at the helm of a business "steeped in dairying" but which had also embraced change and diversification.
"He will be sadly missed, and we send our best thoughts to the Roan family," he added.
