A private school has contacted more than 3,000 former pupils in a bid to uncover historical allegations of child abuse, it has emerged.

Claims that pupils at Gordonstoun in Elgin, Moray, were abused first became public two years ago.

A number of former pupils at its junior school, Aberlour House, alleged they were abused by teachers in the 1980s and 90s.

Gordonstoun said it was important to learn the lessons of the past.

It is one of a number of independent schools in Scotland named by Lady Smith, the judge who is conducting a national inquiry into historical abuse in the country.

The school has confirmed it sent an email in 2015 to all alumni for whom it had contact details asking them to report any historical allegations.

Prince Charles and his father, the Duke of Edinburgh, both studied at Gordonstoun.
