A woman was taken to hospital after a plant pot was thrown from a bridge into her car and struck her head.

Amy Hourston, 31, was knocked out as a result of the incident, which took place on the A78 near Eglinton Country Park between Irvine and Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, on Tuesday.

Several other vehicles were damaged by other objects thrown from the bridge.

A 13-year-old and 14-year-old have been charged by police in connection with vandalism.

Ms Hourston's injuries included having glass in her eye, a damaged clavicle bone on the left hand side, stitches on her face, two black eyes and cuts all over her hands.

She had surgery on her hand on Thursday.

'Car crash'

Mrs Hourston's husband Mark was in the car at the time, as the couple returned to their home in Stevenston.

They had come from a Christmas party for the Dog's Trust charity they both volunteer with.

Mr Hourston said: "When Amy woke up she thought we'd been in a car crash. I'd noticed two silhouettes on the bridge just before it happened, and one of them moved like he had dropped something, so I'd had a split second before it hit.

"I don't like the term 'it could have been worse' as it could have been a lot better too, but if she'd been leaning over to get something from her bag when it happened she could have been killed."

The 35-year-old added that there have been a number of other incidents on the bridge in recent years.

He added: "The bridge itself could do with having street lights and CCTV as a deterrent."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the force had received several reports of items being thrown from a bridge onto the A78 on Tuesday.

They said several vehicles were affected and a report would be sent to the Scottish Children's Reporters Administration.
