Tributes have been paid to a teenager from West Dunbartonshire who died in a "tragic accident" while on holiday in Lanzarote.

David Alexander, from Clydebank, was reported to have fallen from a balcony at the Galeon Playa Apart-Hotel last week and later died in hospital.

The 18-year-old was on holiday with his parents at the time.

He had been studying NQ Computing: Games Development at The City of Glasgow College.

A spokesperson for the college said: "We are profoundly saddened by the awful news that David has passed away following an accident on holiday.

"We send our deepest condolences to David's family and friends at this desperately sad time and our professional staff are on hand to provide wellbeing support to any of our students affected by this tragedy."

The teenager regularly attended meetings of the Golden Friendships charity in Clydebank where he was described a "very popular young man".

Jim McLaren, the head of the social inclusion charity, said in an online tribute: "Sadly David lost his life in a tragic accident this week in Lanzarote. David was a very popular young man who loved being part of our club.

"His aunt Angela told me it was like a second home to him and brought him great friendship and happiness.

"On behalf of Golden Friendships we would like to offer our condolences to David's family at this sad time."

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Lanzarote and are in contact with the local authorities."
