Public sector strikes: Which workers are still on strike on Friday?

Strike action continues today for some public sector workers, following Thursday's mass walk-out.

Eight hundred members of Unite working in schools and special schools continued an eight-day strike which began on Wednesday.

Bus drivers, caterers, cleaners and classroom assistants are among those still on strike.

Members of Unite and the GMB which operate gritters on Northern Ireland roads continue to strike.

Several hundred Roads Service workers are taking part in the action that is due to last until Wednesday 24 January.

Also still on strike are Unite members working in the Forestry Service.

Unite have described the eight-day strike among school workers as "an escalation of ongoing industrial dispute seeking implementation of a pay and grading review".

In a statement, the EA said it recognised the challenges the strike action presented for schools, parents, carers and young people.

It said it was "making every effort to minimise disruption to services" and keep families and staff informed.

Alan Perry from the GMB explained that gritters were out on strike for longer than other workers as their dispute with management is over two separate issues; pay, and a productivity bonus which he described as "completely outdated and wrong".

A yellow warning for ice in Northern Ireland is active until 10:00 GMT.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said the gritting of the road network has been "severely impacted" with only the motorway network having been treated by private partners.

"Road users are being asked to think carefully about the need to travel and if travelling are advised to exercise caution when travelling on untreated roads," a DfI spokesman said.

The three public transport unions participating in the strike have said they will meet on Friday to agree how to continue their industrial action.

On Thursday, thousands of public sector workers staged rallies during what was billed as Northern Ireland's largest strike in 50 years.

Workers left picket lines to join rallies in Belfast, Londonderry, Omagh, Magherafelt and Enniskillen at lunchtime.

More than 100,000 public sector workers from 16 unions took part in the day of action.

The vast majority of those taking part in Thursday's strike returned to work on Friday.

Several medical unions were only on strike for a half day.

Members of the Society of Radiographers, Royal College of Midwives, and Royal College of Nursing were back in work by Thursday afternoon.
