Road safety: PSNI cuts very worrying, says safety campaigner

A campaigner says he's very worried about the affect cuts to the Police Service of Northern Ireland's road policing unit will have on safety.

The force said 21 roles were cut from the unit in the last financial year with no plans to increase numbers.

It comes as the number of road deaths in Northern Ireland hit their highest level in eight years, with 71 people dying in 2023.

Christopher Sherrard, the chair of road safety charity Life After, said he was worried about how the cuts will affect education and investigations into driving incidents.

"The funding is not there for the promotion of road safety and the police are vital in helping do that," he said.
