A vehicle has been damaged after a pipe bomb was thrown at a house in Newry, County Down, on Sunday evening.

Police said they were investigating a report of criminal damage after the incident at about 19:20 GMT in Watsons Road.

No injuries were reported but officers said it was a "reckless attack".

A number of residents who had to leave their homes during the police operation have been allowed to return and the road has reopened.

In a separate security alert in Maghera, County Londonderry, an item described as an elaborate hoax was taken away for forensic examination.
