North Yorkshire: Polls open in county's first regional mayoral election

Polls have opened across North Yorkshire to elect the county's first regional mayor.

Six candidates are standing for the chance to lead the newly formed York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Polling stations will be open between 07:00 and 22:00 BST. To vote in person at a polling station, voters will need to bring photo ID.

Counting of the votes will begin on Friday with a result expected later that day.

The York and North Yorkshire mayor will have the power to make decisions locally on issues including public transport, housing and adult education.

They will also take responsibility for community safety, and will be able to appoint a deputy mayor who will carry out many of the duties currently held by the North Yorkshire police, fire and crime commissioner.

The combined authority does not replace the existing North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council, which will continue to deliver services to residents.

The mayor will act as a figurehead for York and North Yorkshire, lobbying the government for support on regional issues.
