Two women have been seriously injured after their car left the road and hit a tree in North Yorkshire.

The women had been in a dark-coloured Ford Focus which was travelling northbound on A1041, between Selby and Camblesforth.

The car left the road at about 10:20 GMT and both women, believed to be in their 60s and 70s, were taken to hospital.

Police have asked motorists to avoid the area.

"The road is expected to remain closed for several more hours while our collision investigation team examine the scene of the collision," a spokesperson said.

Motorists have been asked to divert via the A19 to avoid tailbacks, after a coach became stuck while trying to take a shortcut.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.
