An 11-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after an incident in a North Yorkshire village.

Police were called to a property in Church Row, Beckwithshaw, near Harrogate at 08:20 BST on Monday.

North Yorkshire Police said their injuries were believed to have been caused by "a bladed article".

The boy is in a stable condition. The injured man is in a serious condition and is under police guard.

Det Insp Steve Menzies said: "I am relieved to say that, following emergency surgery, the 11-year-old boy is now in a stable condition in hospital.

"The 40-year-old man remains in a serious condition and is under police guard."

He said two other children, aged 10 and 13, had been in the house, but were unharmed and were being cared for by relatives.

The force was not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, he added.

"An investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances of exactly what happened this morning," he said.

A cordon remains in place outside the house and the road remains closed.

The incident was not connected to the nearby school, police said.
