Bins in some places in Swindon have reportedly not been collected since November

Overdue bin collections are expected to be completed in the next week after 45,000 were left uncollected.

Swindon residents reported overflowing rubbish for weeks, the local council said it now expected the final 10,000 bins to be collected shortly.

New lorries and a changes to waste collections in November are thought to have compounded the problem,

Swindon Borough Council has also blamed Christmas delays and too much cardboard out for the recycling wagons.

South Swindon Conservative MP Sir Robert Buckland described it as a "public health issue".

Councillor Chris Watts said there are often delays around Christmas but the biggest problem has been a big increase in cardboard to collect.

"The recycling wagons are modular. Unfortunately, because one module gets filled up quicker than the other modules, that causes causes an issue where the vehicle has to come back more often."
