A man has died after his car crashed into a lorry as he drove the wrong way on a major road, police have said.

Sussex Police said the 23-year-old was driving a black Nissan Qashqai "towards oncoming traffic southbound" on the A23 near Bolney at about 05:15 BST.

The man, from Cuckfield in West Sussex, was declared dead at the scene.

Appealing for witnesses, the force said officers wanted to speak to the driver of a dark Ford, which stopped at the scene but then left.

A spokesman said the man's next of kin had been informed.

Both carriageways were closed for more than 10 hours between Pease Pottage and Warninglid to allow for investigation and recovery work, but have now reopened.
