A young fox was rescued after being discovered under the passenger seat of a classic car by mechanics.

Unbeknown to the driver, the fox was driven for 15 miles, from Hove to a garage near Plumpton Green, East Sussex, in an Alfa Romeo.

When mechanics started work on the car they spotted the furry stowaway curled up under a bolted-down seat.

RSPCA inspector Kate Barnes said: "I think the mechanics had quite a shock when they were faced with this fox cub.

"Luckily he was totally unharmed by his ordeal and is big enough to be able to survive after being released back into the wild."

Ms Barnes believes the fox had been looking for shelter during the deluge of recent rain, and understandably "didn't realise he was about to be taken on a trip through Sussex".

The fox was taken back to Hove to be released.
