Council advised to reject huge Badley solar panel plan
A council has been advised to reject a giant solar panel development almost the same size as 70 football pitches.
Developers Elgin Energy said the solar farm, on land at Woodlands Farm in Badley in Suffolk, could power 14,000 homes in Stowmarket for 40 years.
Concerns have been raised over food security with more than 90% of the development on agricultural land.
Planning officers have recommended Mid Suffolk District Council refuse the plans.
Crops including cereals and grass are currently grown on the proposed land, reported the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
In its objection letter, Stowmarket Town Council wrote: "This land represents prime agricultural land and the location is questionable.
"It is recognised that a balance needs to be achieved between renewable energy and the continuing provision of productive agricultural land.
"However, it was felt that the balance had not been achieved with the application for this site and hence, the council is not in favour of supporting the proposal."
Planning officers recognised the scheme would contribute to the council's net zero emissions target but said it would have a significant impact on the heritage of the site.
The application will be discussed on Wednesday.
