Ipswich sees second abnormal load pass through town

A second abnormal load, destined for a new power station, has passed through a town centre blocking roads.

The turbine is the largest of three loads heading to Eye in Suffolk, at about 330 tonnes and 11m (36ft) long.

The load left Ipswich Docks at 06:00 GMT to move slowly through the town until it reached Hill View Business Park in Claydon.

Suffolk Highways said spectators needed to be "mindful" of the load and to listen to crews when asked to move.

The load is part of the Progress Power Station, which began being transported last weekend, travelling at speeds of 10-20mph (15-30km/h).

The entire load, including the cradle that carries the turbine, has a total weight of 504 tonnes and measures 80m (262ft) in length.

It travelled along the same route the first load took last Sunday including Cliff Road, Duke Street, Fore Street, Bishops Hill, Felixstowe Road, Derby Road, Tomline Road, Foxhall Road, Grove Lane and onto St Helen's Street.

It then made its way north-west from the town centre, along St Margaret's Street, Crown Street, St Matthew's Street and Norwich Road.

After being transported along Old Norwich Road, it will be parked adjacent to the bus lane, south of Hill View Business Park, until Sunday 5 November.

The council confirmed that while there would be no official road closures, some roads would be "temporarily blocked" while police escorted the abnormal load.
