Artillery shell near Bury St Edmunds' Dobbies is detonated

The Army has carried out a controlled explosion on a 20th Century artillery shell found near a garden centre.

Suffolk Police said a member of the public alerted it to a find in an area close to Dobbies in Rougham Road, Bury St Edmunds just before 08:00 BST.

The force said the Army's bomb disposal team was called in to deal with it.

A police spokesman said the bomb experts moved the shell to a safe location and carried out the controlled explosion.

An Army spokesman said they found a "120mm (5in) artillery shell" dating from World War Two and destroyed it.

"We always advise the public that if they inadvertently disturb what they believe to be live ordnance, they should contact their local police force as a matter of urgency," he said.

Dobbies' outside area was sealed off, but the store said it opened to customers later.
