Rotherham drink-driver blows more than five times the limit

A drunk driver who was more than five times the legal limit when he caused a crash has been jailed.

John Duckworth was unable to speak properly, slurring his words, when he was detained by officers after the three-car crash in Bawtry Road, Rotherham.

South Yorkshire Police said the 46-year-old, of Harmony Way, Rotherham, recorded a sample of 180 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Duckworth was jailed for two years and eight months after pleading guilty at Sheffield Crown Court for his part in the September 2023 collision, which left three people with serious injuries.

He was also banned from driving for 11 years and four months when he was sentenced on 10 April.

PC James Ball said: "This incident highlights the dangers of people getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drink or drugs.

"People were seriously injured because of Duckworth's selfish actions, which could have had fatal consequences."
