Turnip Prize 2023: Party Gate by Mr Keep Calm announced as winner

The winner of this year's spoof Turnip Prize award for purposefully low-effort and cheap art is Mr Keep Calm with "Party Gate".

The competition, held in Somerset, features entries from around the world, but those that display "too much effort" are immediately disqualified.

This year marks the 25th anniversary for the prize, receiving 193 entries.

Competition organiser Trevor Prideaux said: "We got more entries than ever before this year.

"I never expected the award to run on for this long, but people want a Turnip and they want that recognition."

Mr Keep Calm a Government Employee from Chilton Polden in Somerset, said "I was too lazy to take the gate to the recycling tip and decided to enter it in to the Turnip Prize.

"It's a great honour and I can see this as an opening for greater works to come."

Mr Prideaux added: "It's fantastic that Mr Keep Calm has won, he clearly has what it takes to be recognised in modern art circles and will be remembered in art history for no time at all!"

The spoof awards were created in response to Tracey Emin's "My Bed", which was nominated for the first Turnip Prize in 1999.
