Carnival mask trail leads up to Guy Fawkes night

Schoolchildren have been making 25 masks to form part of a trail for carnival-goers to follow.

Pupils from schools and nurseries designed and decorated the masks now on display in and around Bridgwater town centre in Somerset.

Children used a variety of techniques to decorate the masks, with the theme of Wonderful World.

People who successfully locate all the masks will be entered into a £25 prize draw.

Most masks can be seen from shop windows, but a few will need to be viewed by entering the premises.

Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival is the oldest carnival in the UK, having been established in 1881. The carnival is renowned for squibbing, whereby a long row of squibbers line the high street and simultaneously light fireworks.

The carnival's entertainment and schools liaison officer Sarah Humphreys said: "The interest in our education outreach programme continues to grow in popularity, and it's lovely to see so many schools and nurseries taking part in this year's carnival mask initiative.

"We hope by offering these exciting opportunities to local schools and nurseries, it engages and inspires young children to be the Carnivalites of tomorrow, and ensures our tradition continues for future generations to enjoy."

The mask trail will run until 12:00 BST on Friday.
