Rainworth: Project that will see 800 trees planted begins

A council is planting 800 trees to create a "greener and more biodiverse future" for residents.

The trees are part of a planting project at Westbrook Drive in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire.

Newark and Sherwood District Council also aims to plant new hedgerows, individual trees, a small community orchard and a number of small areas of woodland nearby.

The council plans to have all 800 trees planted by the end of the month.

The authority also committed an extra £30,000 to existing budgets to ensure that all the extra trees planted across the district receive aftercare and maintenance.

Councillor Emma Oldham, the council's portfolio holder for biodiversity and environmental services, said: "Through our tree strategy we have committed to managing, protecting and caring for our district's trees as we know the vital role they play in improving biodiversity, supporting wildlife and helping capture carbon and reducing our carbon footprint.

"This is yet another massive stride Newark and Sherwood District Council is taking towards creating a greener and more biodiverse future for our residents, and I can't wait to see what else we can achieve as a district."
