Police have commended the efforts of a farmer and motorists who joined forces to clear a fallen tree off a busy main road.

The tree blocked both sides of the A5 at Potterspury, near Towcester, Northamptonshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said passing drivers were able to move the tree enough to allow some traffic through.

The farmer then offered to use his tractor to remove it completely from the carriageway.

PC Tarnia Slater, from Northamptonshire Police's road policing team, said: "Mr Peters from Homestead Farm was incredibly helpful, using his initiative and, in the spirit of the local community, helping clear the road completely.

"Without his help, and that of the other motorists who stopped, everyone would have been stuck there waiting for a long time, so I wanted to offer our thanks to them all for so selflessly helping everyone get on with their day."
