Liverpool John Lennon Airport opens sensory space near departure lounge
A city's airport has opened a sensory space in a departure lounge to help passengers with sensory or cognitive conditions.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport said it would help such passengers acclimatise to the busy airport environment before a flight.
Paul Staples, operations director, said some families can find flights a challenge.
The airport said the £35,000 space was "calming" and "therapeutic".
It was created in partnership with local community business Autism Adventures and Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
Mr Staples said: "This space is a great facility and we would like to thank Autism Adventures and Alder Hey Hospital for all their help and advice which we're confident will make a difference, helping families have a more relaxed start to their journey."
The sensory space is wheelchair accessible and is located near to the picnic area in the departure lounge and is open between 08:00 to 18:00 daily.
The space is free, but passengers need to book use of the facility in advance.
Sensory rooms help people with neurodivergent conditions who process everyday sensory information such as sounds, sights and smells differently.
